Opening of the New Wheeled Sports Park

Calling all Witney Skaters, BMXers, Scooterists and Roller Bladers! The Leys Wheeled Sports Park is now open for business! We are thrilled to announce the official opening of our re-envisioned ramps, ledges and rails. It’s a dedicated space for all wheeled sports lovers, where you can enjoy trying out the revamped space and practicing your tricks and skills. The new facility was funded by a £57,975 grant from FCC Communities Foundation along with a £100,000 contribution from Witney Town Council.

With a focus on inclusivity, the Leys Wheeled Sports Park was designed to accommodate individuals of all ages, skill levels and abilities, providing a welcoming space for everyone to enjoy wheeled sports.

Young people at the Skate Park

The timing of the opening could not have been better. Just a couple of months away from the first ever Olympic Qualifier Series in May. Earlier this month, the six skateboard park skateboarders who will represent Great Britain were announced. The squad is made up of six men and six women, including self- taught Lilly Strachan (aged 16) from Thame. The youngest member of the team is 13 and the oldest 50 which demonstrates that this is a sport that everyone can enjoy, and this was borne out at the opening by the generational and gender spread of those keen to be among the first to showcase their skills over the new obstacles.  Age and gender are no barrier to success.

So, what are you waiting for?

Bring your wheels – be it roller skates, scooters, skateboards, or BMX, and enjoy the rush! Whether you’re a beginner trying to find your balance or a pro looking to perfect your tricks, we have something for everyone.

Mayor, Councillor Owen Collins, of Witney Town Council is delighted to see the new space open and commented,

“It’s an absolute pleasure to be able to reopen the wheeled sports park, and to see over a hundred young people come down to get stuck in immediately.

This project has been an ongoing ambition of the Town Council for a few years and it’s the product of so much hard work from so many people. In particular, though, I want to highlight the many, many young people that have provided feedback and input throughout the process – the success of this design owes a lot to them, and I hope it’s a reminder that not only is the Council here to serve all our community, but that when young people do get involved and engage, amazing stuff happens as a result.

I couldn’t be more delighted to see so many people enjoying the park in the well-timed sunshine of the first true afternoon of spring. This park belongs to them now and I hope they have many, many years of enjoying it ahead. (And yes, I have had a go and have the bruises to prove it!)”

The Leys Wheeled Sports Park opened at 4:30pm on Friday 22nd March with a brief ribbon cutting ceremony with local enthusiasts, members of the public and councillors, including the town’s Mayor and its Leader, all getting their first experience of the new design.
BBC Radio Oxford and Witney Radio came along to gauge the reactions and impressions of those who were keen to get their very first taste of the new wheeled sports area and members of Witney’s new Youth Outreach scheme, The Station, were also present.

Collectable stickers featuring the cool re-imagining of the lamb from the Witney Town Council logo were given out to the park users who attended the opening, a unique addition to a collection, and a fun way to decorate wheels and boards.

Leader of the Council, Councillor Ruth Smith added,

This project benefited from community input into the design and sustainably kept existing concrete and features. It will bring pleasure and skill to many and will bring people into Witney. It was a joyous opening, with skateboards, scooters and BMXs ridden by the very young to the very…experienced.”

Penny Horne, FCC Communities Foundation grant manager, says:

It’s wonderful to see something we have funded finally open and ready to make such a difference to the lives of so many people across Witney. FCC Communities Foundation is always happy to consider grant applications for projects that benefit local communities, and this is a great example of what can be achieved.”

The opening has sparked excitement and positive reactions within the community. Its design ensures a fun and challenging experience making it a valuable asset to the local community. We can’t wait to see you there!

Celebrating our Citizens of the Year 2023

It was truly a night to remember on Friday at the 2024 Civic Reception. Mayor Owen Collins presented the 2023 Citizen awards and in Witney Town Council’s fiftieth year we took a fond look back at some old photographs in a slideshow on the big screen. ⭐

Happily, several former Mayors were able to join us and enjoyed spotting themselves and others among the historic photos. It was a sentimental and heart-warming time and we recalled with affection, the mayors who were unable join us.

Also joining us were current councillors and previous town clerk, Judy White, who started her career at the Witney Town Council from the its very first day in 1974.

The main hall of the Corn Exchange  was stunning with gold themed highlights to further complement the 50 years theme of the event.

These were provided free of charge by @brideandbeautifulevents. Thank you to them for their beautifully designed room.

The proceedings began with the cutting of a huge celebration cake featuring the Gold 50 version of Witney Town Council’s logo.

The mood was also suitably celebratory with current Mayor, Councillor Owen Collins producing some great one-liners and some pretty bad puns as he joked with guests.

The very talented Paul Ashton-Bridges provided music and more laughs with his engaging delivery and selection of guaranteed audience participation songs.

The well -deserved awards began with a special award to the Rev Toby Wright, who has been Witney’s Team Rector since 2009. He has supported Civic events and been generous with his time despite being extremely busy. Later this year he will be leaving the parish to serve as the Dean of Wells.  We will miss him and there isn’t an award big enough to convey our thanks to him!

Next up Witney Vikings were awarded Sports Team of the Year with acknowledgments paid to the hard work of all the incredible volunteers that support the club, and the young people that bring such enthusiasm to the game.

The third award went to the volunteers at Witney Food Revolution who run the Witney Larder, for which there is a small membership fee and the Fridge, which is free to everyone. This impressive organisation combats food waste and provides the community with access to cheap or free food, by taking and redistributing surplus food and other goods from supermarkets.  The initiative is not about need, but about reducing waste and the tons of food that is going to landfill every week.  The team took home the Community Organisation of the Year award.

Finally, the Citizen of the Year Award went to Squadron Leader Mike Caffrey, the dedicated and popular leader of 2120 Squadron, Witney Air Cadets. Support for this nomination had poured in from across the town, from cadets themselves, colleagues and other cadet leaders  and from Councillors and staff at the Town Hall.  The Citizen of the Year award is the most prestigious of the Citizen awards and Mike was a hugely popular winner, as was very obvious  as he accepted his award from the Mayor.

Congratulations to the well-deserving winners, and grateful thanks to all who gave their time to nominate them. A Citizen award is the perfect way to acknowledge the great work that happens in our town.

Our 2023 winners

Well done to Reverend Toby, Wright, the Witney Vikings Youth Football Club, Witney Food Revolution, and Mike Caffrey.

Traffic Calming at The Leys

The speed hump on the road alongside the Leys
The speed hump on the road alongside the Leys

The long anticipated redevelopment of the leys by Courtside in partnership with Witney Town Council is well underway.

With the new, bigger Coffee Shed café destined to become a multi-activity community hub and with additional courts and other enhanced and new recreational facilities, the project aims to promote physical and social well-being and the Leys is set to become the flagship recreation destination for Witney. With greater numbers of people expected to use the Leys and and a likely increase in vehicles accessing the site, traffic calming measures have been put in place to mitigate risk to pedestrians.

The road alongside the Leys was already identified as an area where some antisocial driving behaviours had been observed and speeding was also regularly happening.

Witney Town Council consulted with local residents and as a result of feedback contributed a sum of £5000 toward the traffic calming project, comprising speed cushions and a hump in The Leys, which was delivered and co-funded by Oxfordshire County Council.

Looking Back – Fifty Years of Witney Town Council – April 3rd 1974

extract from the minutes – minute 3

The Council considered the position that had arisen as to office accommodation for the Town Council following the apparent failure to agree with the West Oxfordshire District Council as to successor Parish Council rights in the matter. The Chairman explained the outcome of the meeting held on the morning of Saturday 30th March, 1974 between herself and members of the Parish Council with the acting Clerks and the Chairman and Treasurer of the West Oxfordshire District Council. The requirements of both Councils was referred to and following a private meeting between the two Chairmen it was found that there was no basis of agreement. It was suggested by Mr. Edgington that the matter should go to arbitration and the Chairman of the new Oxfordshire County Council was suggested.

Following a comprehensive discussion of the problem that had arisen, and bearing in mind the efforts previously taken by the Witney Urban District Council over a long period to resolve this matter before  1st April, 1974, it was decided that this whole question should be referred to the Department of the Environment as a formal matter of dispute on the basis of the situation that currently exists and the acceptance by this Council of the resolution of the Witney Urban District Council of 27th March 1974 dealing with this matter.

The question of the exclusive use of the offices specified in the resolution currently being used was raised, and the Clerk explained that until such time as the District Council moved its storage equipment out, including the fixed safe, and the Parish Council subsequently moved in, there would have to be a mutually acceptable means of access for both parties to a number of rooms in the building.
