Many of you enjoyed browsing the old copies of the Witney Gazette and discovering the naughty antics of ancestors in the Constabulary Summons book, here at the Town Hall for the Heritage Open Day event last year.
This year we are uncovering the history behind our Victorian cemetery at Tower Hill. Long before the Town Council, Urban District Council or WODC existed, the Burial Board purchased land and appointed architects and contractors to carry out the work to create ‘Witney Burial Ground’.
What sort of thing?
The chapel will be open and within it some of our older burial records, historic documents and reproductions will be on display.
There will be a self- led heritage trail with explore and discover questions and a guide which will cover
o The Commonwealth War Graves
o The Wishing Tree story
o The ‘local celebrity graves’ of Witney’s rich and famous
o The flora and fauna of TH cemetery
Service of Reflection
At midday on Saturday 9th only, there will be a short service of reflection led by Rev Toby Wright and Father Patrick Broun with music from Witney Town Band.
Refreshments and Parking
Refreshments and limited parking kindly provided by Our Lady and St Hugh Church at the bottom of Tower Hill.
